Butterfly Backgrounds

IT's Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day and I've got no time to enter any giveaways so thought I might do one instead. (so please excuse awful last minute pics) Giveaway closed, 16 May - thanks to Jules for your very helpful comments and easy to find email address -check your inbox!

I'm mid-way through a cushion cover / wall hanging featuring a butterfly from a mudpies and pins pattern and am totally stuck with my background choices.

Would you pop on over and find me on instagram at blair_girl2, then come back here and let me know which background fabric you like best and why?  The most helpful comment or the one I like most will get the choice of a a couple of the left over FQs or the finished cushion or wall hanging, whichever you'd prefer!

I'm hoping to link up to Le Challenge on the 15th May, so I need to get busy sewing!

  1. My favorite is the red shown above, because it provides the best contrast with both the light and dark blue used in the fairy, and also gives warmth to the otherwise cooler colors. As far as which I would prefer, I think I would like the fabric because I am a new quilter without much of a stash. Beautiful piece! Thanks for the giveaway. sarah@forrussia.org

  2. I think I'd pick that white one, the second one in on the left up on the top photo :)

    1. No need to sign up whomom. Just take a quick peek. Id have added the pictures here, but linking phone pics to Blogger was proving too much of a challenge for my limited it skills!

  4. The white one shows off all parts of the butterfly the best. Some of the darker ones make her head and body a little less visible, The pattern is also simpler compared to the patterns on the butterfly, which draws the eye to the butterfly rather than to the background fabric.

    1. Thanks alexis. I think the lack of contrast is a part of whats been bothering me. My other half thinks some of them are a bit too busy to :)

  5. I think the dark blue makes the butterfly really pop. the white and lighter blue don't offer enough contrast and the dark red is too muddy.

  6. I've picked two, the leafy green one which reminds me of a spring garden and the dark blue which makes the butterfly very noticeable (although makes me think of a moth in the light)
I've put my comments on the instagram pics I like (rose_wendy)

  7. Lovely job on the butterfly. I prefer to use rather plain backgrounds for mine so that the butterfly is the star of the piece so I'd go for "Background auditions 2" as it's the simplest of the background fabrics and really highlights the butterfly.

    2. It was fun. I might scale it down and do a meadowful to keep later in the year

  8. I like the green, but the red does make a nice contrast. I noticed the butterfly blends into the white ones alot.

  9. I like the navy - the greater contrast emphasises the fragility of the butterfly

  10. I think I'd pick the dark blue as it reminds me of the night sky.

  11. I like the #4 one . I like the contrast on it

  12. I love 3&4 best, 3 because the butterfly pops next to the red heart background, 4 I love for the softness... Also I love the placement of the butterfly in #4 best. It's so hard to decide. I absolutely love the fabrics that you picked for the butterfly. The bamboo looking stripe for the wing portion closest to the body makes it look so real, and the edge fabrics create a lacy look...soooo pretty!!!

    1. I hadn't thought too much about placement until now. Thanks Linda

  13. I really like #4 right off the bat since the butterfly really pops out (the charcoal head does get a tiny bit lost but maybe some embroidery to bring it out). #5 is close but the pattern blends into the wings sometimes. But I may be bias because I think a navy pillow would look perfect on my cream colored couch in my charcoal grey living room ;) Thanks for the chance!

  14. I like the reddish color because it shows the butterflies off more.

  15. I like the dark blue because of the contrast with the butterfly and because it looks like a magical night.

  17. I love option 1 and 2, especially 2. It looks gorgeous!
And Paula's butterfly is as well :)

    Many thanks for the chance!

  18. I like the contrast with the dark blue background, it sets off every aspect of the design.

  19. The white one is so beautiful!

  20. I do like the red one, it contrasts with everything in the butterfly so nothing is swallowed. Thanks.

  21. The (second) dark background reminds me of the night sky and defines the butterfly beautifully and doesn't detract anything from your beautiful sewing skills in making the butterfly. The last green back ground (second Choice) offers movement to the butterfly but sadly drowns the butterfly and it loses definition. For this reason I choose Dark Background

  23. I like the greenish one. It looks outdoorsy, which is where you'd naturally find a butterfly.

  24. It probably depends on the effect you wish to generate. The dark blue ( 2) gives an excellent contrast, and makes the butterfly really stand out, but I have a preference for the delicacy of the result against the green background, (5). I think this makes the butterfly more real, if you know what I mean? There you are then, 5.

    Good luck on le Challenge!

  27. The butterfly shows up best against the dark blue, but it not my favorite. Maybe a darker green or even an orange(to bring out the blue in the wings). 24Tangent "at" gmail "dot" com

  28. I think I like #4 the best, because it goes so perfectly with the butterfly! Putting the light on the dark really helps it stand out as opposed to #5 where it kind of blends in. You want people to be able to see your hard work and not have it just fade into the background. The dark fabric makes a perfect background and even has some of the white in it so it coordinates. Anyway, that's my opinion! Whatever you choose, make sure you love it. :) Don't spend a lot of time on it if you aren't sure you love it. If you have to, go to the fabric store! :D Your butterfly is beautiful and it deserves the perfect background!!! :D

  29. #3 or #4, I am sorry I am late, I am also making something for Le Challenge so I have been doing more sewing than entering. A darker background show's off the butterflies better, and they are beautiful butterflies!

  30. I like the #5,May 13, 1-3 the one with the background white flowers!

  31. I like the darker blue background - it really shows off the details in the butterfly! Thanks for the chance.

  32. I like the speckled almost light blue polka dot with cream background best because it makes the fairy just pop out! I'm really into a lot of bright colors. Love your projects and thanks for the giveaway.

  35. I like the green one just because I like green.

  36. The dark fabric is the best because the pattern interfere the least with the appliqué.

  37. I like the dark blue fabric. The butterfly really pops against that background and the blues and purples in the fabric are accented by it. As someone on Instagram commented "It looks like a moth in the moonlight." First time I've been to instagram by the way.

  38. I like the navy fabric best. Sorry I am not on Instagram.

  39. I like the navy the best - it definitely shows off the butterfly the best. I also like the red, but it doesn't make the butterfly pop quite as much - it's gorgeous!!

  40. I love the red warm tone!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like the green and white because even though you can still clearly see the butterfly you have to pay close attention to absorb all the fabrics and detail

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'd pick the dark blue one, for contrast. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I like the dark blue one. I feel you can really see the pattern with the darker color as background

    ReplyDelete
  44. The dark blue provides the best contrast and is the most evocative.....sky, night, dreams of a butterfly dreaming he's a man.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I really like the dark blue (Background auditions 4) as well. It brings out the blues in the butterfly and really accentuates the butterfly nicely.

  46. I love the background additions 5. I think it makes the butterfly pop out the most
